Tomb of Ghaus Mohammad & Tansen: The city’s most famous Muslim building is the sixteenth-century Tomb of Ghaus Mohammed, an Afghan prince who helped Babur take Gwalior fort. It’s a fine specimen of early Mughal architecture, and a popular local shrine. Elegant hexagonal pavilions stand at each of its four corners; in the centre, the large central dome retains a few remnants of its blue-glazed tiles. The tomb’s walls are inlaid with exquisite pierced-stone jali screens.

The second and smaller of the tombs in the gardens is that of the famous Mughal singer-musician Tansen, one of the “Nine Jewels” of Emperor Akbar’s court.

Jai Vilas Palace: One of the most popular tourist attractions of Gwalior, Jai Vilas Palace Museum was erected way back in the year 1874 by Maharaja Jayaji Rao Scindia and its cost amounted to INR 1 crore. Originally built as a palace, it has now been turned into a museum

The palace has a huge Durbar Hall, beautifully furnished with superb chandeliers, gilt and gold furnishings and a huge carpet. The chandeliers and the gold leaves in the hall are the world’s heaviest. There is a huge dining table with a silver train is a highlight. This mini train is a table trolley which rotates itself on the table in front of diners so that they can pick up food.

Day 3

Excursion to Morena (Mitawali temple, GarhiPadawali& The Bateswara Group of temples) by road

Today afterbreakfast  drive to visit Morena visiting a beautiful set of structures dating back to the Gupta and Gurjara-Pratihara dynasties define the mastery of a historic era. The marvels of Mitawali, Padavali, and Bateshwar temples.

MITAWALI is a village where the popular Chausath Yogini Temple lies - The temple is perched atop a hill surrounded by the lush greenery. A climb of approximately 100 steps will take you to the beauty of this splendid round temple. The striking views will definitely have you reaching for your camera too! As claimed by etchings and engravings in the temple, ancient shrine is said to have been built by the Maharaja Devapala. In fact, the Parliament House in New Delhi is believed to have been inspired from the circular design and architectural intricacies of the Mitawali temple!

PADAVALI : The notable Padavali fortress was built in the 18th century by the Jat Ranas rulers of Dhaulpur. Graciously guarded by a lion and lioness, the fort also has a temple that once served as a divine place to worship Lord Shiva. Every stone used in the fortification and in the making of the temple has something to convey about the ancient era through its inscription and detailing!

BATESHWAR :The site is not just about one temple; the Bateshwar temples are a cluster of almost 200 mini grandeurs made of sandstone, devoted to lords Shiva and Vishnu. Spread over 25 acres, these shrines were built across slanted hills near Padavali. Perhaps it was as culmination of resurgent aspirations of the people in the post-Gupta times, which incidentally enabled the passing on of vibrant traditions of temple architecture. After visit return to Gwalior. Overnight at Gwalior.

Bir Singh Palace: Bir Singh Palace is a most impressive monument, its great bulk surmounted by the elegant group of domes providing a gratifying spectacle from every aspect. The Bundela king Raja Bir Singh Deo, apparently not satisfied by the majestic Jehangir Mahal Palace, he had built at his capital in Orchha, went on, in 1620, to build a palace of such a distinctive character as to stand in a class by itself on a rocky mount in Datia 43 kms away.

Jhansi is famous all over the world for its valiant struggle against the British troops. The name of Jhansi is synonymous with Rani Lakshmi Bai who fought single handedly with the British troops during the freedom struggle. The Jhansi fort, a living testimony of ancient glamor and valour, also has a fine collection of sculptures which provide an excellent inside into the eventful history of Bundelkhand.

The fort has ten gates (Darwaza). Some of these are Khandero Gate, Datia Darwaza, Unnao gate, Jharna Gate, Laxmi Gate, Sagar Gate, Orcha Gate, Sainyar Gate, Chand Gate.Among places of interest within the main fort area are the Karak Bijli Toup (Tank), Rani Jhansi Garden, Shiv temple and a “Mazar” of Ghulam Gaus Khan, Moti Bai and Khuda Baksh.
